Portia’s Outfits on The White Lotus are an Ode to the Chaos of Gen Z Style

Have you watched the second season of “The White Lotus” yet? Gen Z is feuding over all of the fashion on the hit HBO Max show. Fashion moguls in favor of Portia’s unusual style are comparing the character to Youtube personality Emma Chamberlain. While others are calling her style a mix between the Urban Outfitters sale section and hand-me-down little boy’s clothes. In the first season costume designer, Alex Bovaird used fashion as a form of communication, which can be seen in the second season as well. The characters' fashion reflected their social class and ultra rich lifestyle. From Rachel’s Goyard tote bag to Connie’s 75 thousand dollar bracelets, the cast’s outfits made a clear statement on their financial ranking and upper class stature.

In season  two of “The White Lotus”, Portia’s chaotic style represents her lack of self assurance. She is a young woman in her 20’s working as a personal assistant to a wealthy woman, Tanya, played by Jennifer Coolidge. Portia is in the midst of an identity crisis which is translated in her contrasting wardrobe. The recent graduate dresses in vintage upcycled Tommy Hilfiger polos, handmade crochet bucket hats, chunky rectangle sunglasses, Dad sandals, baby tees, sweater vests, and graphic tops. Aside from her ever changing style, her look remained consistent with a nose ring and a shimmery lime green manicure.

“She’s young, she doesn’t really know who she is, and she’s trying on different ideas,” Emmy-winning costume designer Alex Bovaird explained to Variety. “Sometimes she dresses more dainty, and sometimes she dresses like a boy.” Bovaird also told Vogue that when choosing Portia’s wardrobe she tried to mirror the way 20-somethings seem to dress, haphazardly and randomly, borrowing pieces from past decades.

Fans of the show and fashion alike have expressed their polar opposite opinions on Portias’ style. Some Gen Z users have claimed that Portia’s character is relatable and they dress like her too, whereas others say it reminds them of Hillary Duff’s Y2K style on the show Lizzie McGuire.
