Gender neutral clothing has become popular over the past few years, especially trending now within the Gen Z community. Although unisex clothing became popular in the 1960’s in response to the youth revolution and the hippie movement, a new term has become mainstream and that is gender neutral clothing. Gender neutral clothing has evolved greatly since the era of colored tights and go-go boots in the 1960’s.
Now gender neutral clothing is popular among celebrities like Billie Eilish, Harry Styles, Billie Porter, and Lil Nas X. Some of their styles were inspired by trend setting celebrities like Prince, David Bowie, and Elton John.
Since October 2020, consumer interest in gender neutral clothing has doubled according to WGSN. This can be linked to several social changes in our country such as the pandemic and working from home pushing people to wear comfier, androgynous clothing, as well as increased non-binary and LGBTQ+ inclusivity.
Not only does gender neutral clothing create a safe space for non-binary and gender non-conforming individuals, it also pushes the fashion industry towards a more sustainable future. Gender neutral clothing can often be used as a capsule wardrobe with solid colors, minimalist prints, and everyday basics.
Fashion is a form of self-expression, and clothing is what we use to express ourselves. Now with more men and women blurring the lines between female and male clothing, the possibilities of self-expression are endless.
Here are some of my favorite pieces from our website that are categorized as women’s clothing, but I think can be gender fluid.
